How do I deal with uncertainty about getting a new job?

You’re in the midst of a job hunt. Although it can be exciting to see what lies ahead of you, it’s okay to feel anxious about the uncertainties. Every time you do a job search, you experience different things, and I see that today you are experiencing discomfort with it.

This blog is an excerpt from our mini-therapy on this discomfort.

what is a discomfort?

Discomfort is anything that could be stopping you from achieving what you really want to achieve. Any feeling or issue that you’re currently struggling with.

what is a mini-therapy?

A mini-therapy is hyper-personalized, bite-sized content delivered via an immersive and interactive therapy experience on the ‘being’ app. It’s designed by experienced mental health professionals and helps you work through a discomfort by using therapeutic interventions that they would use in in-person therapy.

Note: For the most optimal experience, try the mini-therapy on the ‘being’ app :’)

the excerpt:

You’re in the midst of a job hunt. Although it can be exciting to see what lies ahead of you, it’s okay to feel anxious about the uncertainties. Every time you do a job search, you experience different things, and I see that today you are experiencing discomfort with it.
With this mini-therapy let’s understand how to cope with this feeling, and what would asmall step to navigating through these transitions look like.
Feeling uncertain about finding a job is normal. This is because job hunting can be unpredictable and stressful, especially if you are not sure what the future holds. But, this uncertainty can also provide opportunities for growth and learning.

Mindfulness - Do Nothing Tool
I’ll give you a minute to consider it.

Think back to a time in your life when you faced uncertainty. Perhaps you were starting a new school, moving to another city, or beginning a new job. While it may have been difficult at the time, you likely learned a lot about yourself and gained various skills and experiences.

Mindfulness - Do Nothing Tool
Was there a time you took a chance and learned from that experience?

Good job you!
Thank you for sitting on that thought. Now, let’s talk about anxious feelings. You may have questioned whether you have the right skills or experience, and wondered whether you can adjust to an unfamiliar environment. You may also doubt whether you'll ever find a job that's right for you.

These thoughts and questions are significant, so take some time to reflect on what you are looking for in a job and what is important to you. This will reveal your values and goals, helping you stay focused and motivated during the job-hunting process.
New situations can show you how adaptable and resilient you are. Notice if there are certain personal beliefs that undermine your confidence in your strengths. Let's affirm ourselves today.

Affirmations Tool
Give yourself time to repeat this statement or read it with me.
“I have the ability to adapt and overcome challenges. I will remain open-minded while exploring different opportunities and trust I can handle whatever comes my way”.
Let’s repeat it again. “I have the ability to adapt and overcome challenges. I will remain open-minded while exploring different opportunities and trust I can handle whatever comes my way.”

That felt reaffirming, right? You need to believe in your skills and strengths in order to face uncertainties with confidence.
While uncertainty may be inevitable, there are a few steps we will discuss to help with this process.

First, develop a self-care practice. Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally. This means getting enough sleep, eating well, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
Next, what are your expectations of yourself?
Remember that finding a job takes time and effort, which means facing challenges along the way. Set realistic goals and expectations for yourself and celebrate each small victory along the way.

Reflective Question Tool
For the next 2 weeks, can you think of a goal you would like to work on?
What would you need to do to achieve that?

Now that gives you a plan to work towards. You’re doing great :)

Lastly, stay flexible and open-minded. Be willing to adapt and alter your plans as needed. You may need to explore different job opportunities or take on temporary work in the meantime, and that’s the process of growth.
Remember that a job hunt is exciting because you get to learn about yourself, choose from a world of waiting opportunities and meet interesting people. If you’ve had positive experiences during your job hunt, learn how to build on them.

Through this mini-therapy, we learnt that feeling uncertain is normal and there are things you can do to address that feeling. Use the affirmations to get that boost of confidence when you need it.
And don’t forget to practice self-care and stay flexible. I’m rooting for you, and I believe in your capabilities. All the best with your job hunt!

Take care and Just Be 💜
