It is definitely a valid question - what is the best treatment available for depression? The fact that this question is even popping up in your head indicates how frustrated you are. So without adieu, let’s answer this question for all of us.
We have good news and bad news.
Bad news first - there is no one best therapy for depression globally.
But the good news is that any therapy available can be the best therapy for you.
What does this mean? Because most things in this world are complicated and grey, even depression (which is a subjective mental health experience) has no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Each of us is a unique individual with unique experiences, upbringing, exposures, feelings, and personalities. This means the treatment best suited for us is also special and non-standard.

Different Types of Therapies 💐

Let’s briefly understand what the different types of therapies available for treating depression are:
  1. Cognitive Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on converting negative thought patterns into positive ones.
  1. Behavioral Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on building positive actions and behaviors.
  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on working on both negative thinking and behaviors to transform them into constructive driving forces.
  1. Dialectical Behavior Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on building a sense of acceptance and safety within and by oneself.
  1. Interpersonal Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on developing healthy relationships and social interactions to remedy mental health issues.
  1. Problem Solving Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on specific problem areas to find solutions and build healthy coping mechanisms.

All of these therapies can treat depression. Each can either be conducted as a private session between the licensed mental health professional and client or in a group setting. The advantage of combining both private and group sessions is that the client can learn from others’ experiences in a safe, non-judgmental, and guided environment. It also helps the clients put their learnings to practice and receive new perspectives from others struggling with similar issues.

Which one is best for me? 🫂

Again, a very valid question. So, now that we know about the general types of therapy practiced to treat depression, we can move on to understanding how to make the right choice for ourselves.

We need to have a basic understanding of what we are struggling with to narrow down our options and pick the therapy that is best suited to help us treat our depressive symptoms. When we understand which symptoms of depression we are dealing with, we are naturally directed to the therapy that focuses on such issues.

Which means❓

Cognitive Therapy works best for negative thinking and emotions. Behavioral Therapy works best for physical symptoms of depression and risky, reckless, or harmful behaviors. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy works best for both emotional and physical problems. Dialectical Therapy works best for having intense feelings of insecurity within oneself that lead to destructive coping mechanisms. Interpersonal Therapy works best for relationships that are triggering or unstable. Problem-Solving Therapy works best for specific problem areas that need guidance and support to cope with, manage or resolve.

WHO’s reply to your question 🎁

A fun fact about ‘the best therapy for depression is that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends Interpersonal Therapy in group settings as the first and most important therapy to treat depression. WHO has conducted extensive research to study the effects of different therapies and found that IPT in group settings worked very well for most people. But it is important to remember that what works for most might not necessarily work for us.

So the best therapy is the one that works for you :)

Please Note 🚩

Depression (aka clinical depression) is a mental illness that can be of two different types - mild depression (aka persistent depressive disorder) and major depression (aka severe depression or major depressive disorder). Common depression symptoms include prolonged depressed mood, low self-esteem, mood swings, loss of interest, and having trouble focusing. Other physical symptoms include sleep problems, weight gain, excessive sleeping, or having difficulty concentrating.
Depression is also often accompanied by a mood disorder or other mental disorders such as seasonal affective disorder, bipolar disorder, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. If you have such symptoms of depression or thoughts of self-harm, please use the national suicide prevention lifeline or contact a mental health professional to seek treatment options.
