When it comes to mental health, depression is a common topic of discussion. The who, what, why, and how. But did you know there are types of depression? And curiously, mild depression doesn't mean that the symptoms are milder. There's more to the story.
Be it mild or severe, depression has become a common household name. How I wish it weren't so. About 1 in 3 people in the U.S. suffers from depressive symptoms. And chances that the one person is either a young person or a woman are pretty high.

Depressive Mental Disorders πŸ“„

What is Mild Depression ❓

This type of depression is also known as Persistent Depressive Disorder (aka PDD). What it means is that the range of symptoms is mild and experienced over a long period. The symptoms generally have to do with behavior and how it is impacted by mental health. The symptoms must last for the majority of the week for two years for the condition to be diagnosed as Mild Depression.

What is Severe Depression ❔

This mental illness is also known as Major Depression or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This type of clinical depression has a broader range of symptoms (with the possibility of physical symptoms) experienced in depressive episodes lasting anywhere between 2 weeks and six months.

What are some key differences? πŸ†š

πŸ§‘πŸΌβ€βš•οΈ Ease of Diagnosis: PDD is harder to diagnose as it is a form of high-functioning depression (where a person with clinical depression can continue to live their everyday life), and the symptoms are not necessarily noticeable.
🩺 Ease of Treatment: PDD is easier to treat once diagnosed as the symptoms tend to be on the milder end.
🚧 Depression Symptoms and Treatment: PDD tends to be less severe and primarily psychological (having trouble concentrating, low-self esteem) and can generally be treated with lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and regular exercise. At the same time, MDD deals with intense symptoms such as deep hopelessness, loss of interest in life, and physical symptoms (these symptoms interfere with physical health like insomnia or substance abuse). Its treatment generally requires a combination of antidepressant medication and therapy by a mental health professional.
βŒ› Depressive Episode: For PDD, a depressive episode lasts for around two years, whereas for MDD, it lasts for at least two weeks and can stretch up to 6 months.

Why and How does it affect our mental health? πŸ€”

Depression leads to both emotional and physical problems, the root of which lies in the emotional aspect controlled by brain chemistry. Certain hormones in our body are very very important for good health.
😊 Serotonin: This hormone regulates our happiness and optimism levels.
😁 Dopamine: This hormone regulates our pleasure and motivation levels.
πŸ€• Norepinephrine: This hormone regulates our aggression and fight-or-flight response.
The more we've dealt with hormonal (ir)regulation, the more aspects of our lives get impacted - our thoughts and behavior also get linked to our emotions over time. Mild Depression (and emotional problems) can turn into Severe Depression (+ physical issues).

How to go about Treating Depression 🩹

Emotional support is the first and foremost way of finding relief from a depressed mood and painful feelings.
  1. πŸ—£οΈ Talk Therapy: Also known as counseling or psychotherapy, this treatment of depression generally involves a psychologist talking you through your problems over a period of 8-10 sessions.
  1. πŸ“± Mini-Therapy: This treatment involves a set of bite-sized therapy sessions that are accessible whenever one needs them. Mini-therapies by being are designed for specific discomforts which allow processing and regulating those heavy emotions then-and-there, without a pile-up.
  1. πŸ’Š Other clinical treatments: These treatments include medication and other procedures such as vagus nerve stimulation or brief electrical stimulation. These treatments follow a diagnosis and are recommended if the symptoms persist for longer than an average depressive episode.

All in All βž•

Depression is very treatable and is almost a consequence of a fast-paced world filled with social media and the internet. We're all in this together.

Please Note 🚩

Clinical Depression is never clear cut, making it harder to diagnose and treat. People with PDD can have a major depressive episode (depressive episode of MDD) when it is possible to have suicidal thoughts. If you have such symptoms of depression, please use the national suicide prevention lifeline or contact mental health professionals to seek treatment options. MDD and PDD can occur alongside other depressive disorders such as bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder (click here to read more).
